We all got one! A Person Who Seems To Know How To Raise Your Child Better Than You. 3 Tips On How To Tame That Dragon

Lets be real, being a parent is one of the hardest things to do…well for those of us who want to do it well anyway.

Sometimes I find myself in situations where, as a friend of mine would say, “I don’t know my wrist from my rass”.  My son can do something so incredibly smart but naughty at the same time and I would stand there not knowing whether to laugh or to punish him. Everyday, from the smallest detail to the biggest throw-down I am trying to be the best mother possible to my son. Yet, there’s always someone who wants to make my job a little bit harder. That person who insinuates that I am not doing it right.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I do need the advice but what I don’t need is another person scrutinizing every parental decision I make for my child.

Here are 3 ways I deal with people like that in my life:

1. Do Not Engage

“He’s going to bed too late. When I had Joey he was in bed by 6 o’clock.”

My response would be the most uncaring, apathetic, disinterested “Okay”

This is the one I use when I am most annoyed. When I want to be completely disrespectful but I know my mother didn’t raise me that way. Usually when I do this, the respondent would just look at me like a deer in headlights, completely unsure on whether they should carry on or not. Most of the time they don’t.

2. Engage with Sarcasm

“His diaper either needs changing, he’s hungry or he’s sleepy.”

“You don’t say 🙂 ”

This is the one I use when I think the advice is plain stupid or when I am in the middle of resolving the problem, but before I can, the advice comes pouring in.

3. Time’s Up. Set Boundaries

“You have to let him cry it out.”

“I’m not doing that”

I use this when its time to set boundaries. When I have had enough. Every child and every situation is different and occasionally people have to be reminded of this.

How do you handle people who question your parenting?
